The new 2019 Chevy Silverado HD 4500, 5500, and 6500 trucks have been on sale for some time. These are big commercial trucks that can handle a lot of payload, much more than a 3500 dually. However, these trucks are not rated to tow nearly as much as the the 2020 Chevy Silverado 3500 dually trucks.

Here is our first drive review of a HD 5500 crew cab WT 4×4.

The truck is powered by a 6.6L V8 turbo-diesel engine that is dyno-certified for commercial use at 350 hp and 700 lb-ft of torque. All big commercial engines are dyno-certified for emissions and power. The engine is mated to a heavy duty 6-speed Allison 1700-series automatic transmission.

The truck’s cab is shared with a previous generation Silverado 2500/3500 trucks. You can get the truck in either a two door regular cab or crew cab configurations. The truck is available in 4×4 trim with a heavy-duty Hi/Lo transfer case that does hang down below the frame. It is protected by a steel structure.

The hood opens forward in a clam-shell configuration. It offers relatively easy access to the engine, steering components, and many other maintenance items and components. The front wheel are capable of turning to up to 50 degrees to help this long truck turn.

The truck is offered in many cab to rear axle and wheelbase lengths. The truck you see here has one of the longer wheelbases. Since it is a 4×4, its turning radius is not quiet as good as the one of the 2WD models.

The empty ride quality is harsh with this truck. It is similar to driving an empty 3500 dually. It makes sense since the springs are meant to carry apprximately 10,000 lbs of payload. The springs want to be compressed by some cargo.

We hope to do more video tests with this truck when we have an opportunity.
